Holy Father Calls for Peace

Pope Benedict, speaking to the crowds in St. Peter's Square, asked the world to pray for peace, particularly in the Middle East. Accompanied by two young people, he released a white dove, which immediately flew back in the window at which the pope stood. Given the state of the world today, I can understand the dove not wanting to venture into it. How much safer it is to remain in the presence of the Church. But just as we are called to carry the Good News into the world, the dove eventually left its little comfort zone and flew away.

The Holy Father also spoke about the continued presence of leprosy (Hansen's Disease) in the world, especially among those living in poverty, and the work being done by the Church to eliminate this horrible illness.
