The occasional, often ill-considered thoughts of a Roman Catholic permanent deacon who is ever grateful to God for his existence. Despite the strangeness we encounter in this life, all the suffering we witness and endure, being is good, so good I am sometimes unable to contain my joy. Deo gratias!

Although I am an ordained deacon of the Catholic Church, the opinions expressed in this blog are my personal opinions. In offering these personal opinions I am not acting as a representative of the Church or any Church organization.

Kill the Babies Or Else…

President Biden and his increasingly far-left regime, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and most Democrat politicians have all proven one thing: they hate children. Why else would anyone actively promote the slaughter of unborn children and strive to stop any attempts to limit abortions? Remember, back in 2011, when President Obama threatened to cut off all Medicaid and related funding to Indiana when the state legislature and governor passed legislation to stop state funding of Planned Parenthood? Just think about that. If you don’t kill the unborn, Obama declared, we will cut medical funds to the poor. How nice...

Today is no different. As a result of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision not to overturn the Texan law that severely limits abortion in the state, Joe Biden has pledged a “whole of government” response. He has called on his evil but feckless attorney general, Merrick Garland, to “protect abortion rights” of all Americans by applying the 1994 Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act. HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra also chimed in saying, “…we are telling doctors and others involved in the provision of abortion care, that we have your back.”

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, reminds us that “There are no lengths the Biden administration won’t go to in their drive to prop up the abortion industry and impose abortion on demand up to birth nationwide, on a public that resoundingly rejects their agenda.” But note the change in the pro-abortion forces’ language. Once they wouldn’t utter the word, “abortion,” but instead used such euphemistic phrases as “reproductive health.” But no longer. Now they openly declare their intention to support “abortion rights” and “abortion care.” I find the latter particularly disgusting. For whom are they providing “care”? Certainly not the unborn child who is torn apart during this “safe procedure.”

\What disturbs me most, however, is the cowardice of our bishops. Few seem willing to openly and consistently confront the Catholic politicians who support abortion. There are, of course, exceptions and Nancy Pelosi’s bishop, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, has been a true stalwart. The archbishop recently stated, “A conversion of heart of the majority of our Congressional representatives is needed on this issue, beginning with the leader of the House, Speaker Nancy Pelosi.” He then continued with more than mere words, but called for spiritual action on the part of the faithful: “I am therefore inviting all Catholics to join a massive and visible campaign of prayer and fasting for Speaker Pelosi: commit to praying one rosary a week and fasting on Fridays for her conversion of heart.” I intend to join Archbishop Cordileone and in my own small way, ask all those who read this blog to do the same.

Another disturbing event, related to the slaughter of these modern day innocents, took place just the other day when Nancy Pelosi visited the Vatican on October 8. How ironic that this was the feast day of St. Simeon, who greeted the newborn infant Jesus when He was presented in the Temple in Jerusalem by Mary and Joseph. How many infants have never been presented in a church for Baptism, thanks to the child-hatred of Nancy Pelosi.

More disturbing, however, was the reception the Vatican gave Pelosi. The Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development stated, “We welcome Speaker Pelosi from the U.S. House of Representative. We talked about caring for the environment, in the light of [Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical] Laudato si, migration issues, human rights, health in times of pandemic, and the work of the Vatican COVID Commission.” Note the one subject that apparently went undiscussed: abortion. Apparently the "human development" of the unborn does not merit any attention. This was especially troublesome given that Pelosi, along with the president, is among the most prominent Catholic politicians and has done all in her power to advance and encourage abortions in the U.S.
Pope Francis and the Pelosis

Pelosi and her husband also had a private audience with Pope Francis, but the Vatican had no comment about any subjects discussed during their meeting. One can only hope the Holy Father explained Church teaching to this self-proclaimed “devout Catholic” who seems to consider herself holier and smarter than the Church. One wonders what Archbishop Cordileone thought of her Vatican visit.

Brothers and sisters, pray for the unborn, pray for those who seek and perform abortions, pray for those politicians who further the culture of death, and join the Archbishop of San Francisco by praying the Rosary and Fasting every Friday for the conversion of all.

A Look To the Past

A parishioner sent me a link to one of my own posts, written 13 years ago, telling me how prophetic it was. I disagreed strongly. It was not at all prophetic, but merely a statement of the reality we faced at the time. I also chided him for spending any time reading stuff I wrote years ago. I’m sure he had far better things to do.

Anyway, the post was written on September 28, 2008, just weeks before the election of Barack Obama as president. I did not support Obama for many reasons, but primarily because he denied the right to life and the sanctity of marriage. I firmly believe that anyone who supports abortion cannot honestly claim to be a follower of Jesus Christ. Such people are morally and spiritually dysfunctional. We must pray for their conversion.

All the issues I addressed in that post remain with us today. They differ only in their degree of acceptance by the American people. We are still aborting millions of unborn children and a large percentage of American Catholics and other Christians continue to support and elect pro-abortion politicians. Despite the scandal surrounding former Cardinal McCarrick, too many bishops still tolerate active homosexual priests. Sadly, the scandals of the past will likely continue into the future. As for our society, greed has penetrated every level, and has especially driven our largest corporations. In particular, the huge social media multinationals have become so big and so supportive of big government that our nation is beginning to mirror the traditional fascist state in which complete control of the population becomes the overriding goal.

That these evils remain among us today is not at all prophetic, but merely a reflection of what happens when a society, when our nation, turns its back on the God who loved us into being. God asks for a response. He asks for our repentance, our faith, and our obedience. Did not Our Lord Jesus begin His public ministry with the words, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the Gospel” [Mk 1:15]?

Here’s a link to that earlier post: Elections and Disintegration

Take some time to pray today and thank God for creating you, for giving you the wondrous gift of life.

The Stupid Things People Say

Did you hear the latest from ex-President Obama? Unlike most former presidents, he just can’t help telling us what he thinks of his successor, while at the same time proving that the Obama presidency was unsurpassed in incompetence. Every time he opens his mouth he confirms his inability to understand our nation and its people. Of course this is to be expected from someone who despises the country that was foolish enough to elevate him to its highest office.

As a man who admittedly considers religion no more than a crutch, something the riffraff cling to as a way to deal with frustrations. Yes, indeed, he said this in a closed-door speech when he was first running for president. Here's a link to a recording of his 2008 comments about small-town Americans: Obama 2008.

Today, Obama has shifted his focus to Hispanic-Americans, with whom is is not at all happy. While publicly mulling over the results of the recent election, he criticized the Hispanic voters who cast their votes for Donald Trump. He was greatly displeased because some actually consider abortion an intrinsic evil and gay marriage anything but a marriage. His actual words (listen to him here):
"People were surprised about a lot of Hispanic folks who voted for Trump. But there's a lot of evangelical Hispanics who, you know, the fact that Trump says racist things about Mexicans, or puts detainees, you know, undocumented workers, in cages -- they think that's less important than the fact that, you know, he supports their views on gay marriage or abortion, right?"
No, Mr. President, wrong! Certainly, there are many evangelical Hispanics, but there are many more Catholic Hispanics. And many of these Christian Hispanic-Americans consider abortion the muder of innocent children. They also reject so-called gay marriage. They are against these things because as believing Christians most Hispanics know them to be sinful.
But several other facts seem to escape Obama's notice. Many first- and second-generation Hispanic-Americans are intimately familiar with socialism because they lived under it and experienced its deprivations first-hand. They know what life is like in Cuba and Venezuela and Nicaragua, and came to this country to avoide the socialistic hells those nations have become.

Equally important, though, Hispanic-Americans benefitted tremendously from President Trump's economic policies that drove Hispanic unemployment to its lowest levels in history, and also did wonders for Hispanic entrepreneurs. What Obama likely doesn't know -- because he really seems to know very little -- is that Hispanic-Americans are three times more likely to be entrepreneaurs than other Americans. They strive mightily to live the American dream and pass its benefits on to their families, something that Obama apparently considers a nightmare.

Then, we had to listen to Obama's comment about Trump putting "undocumented workers in cages." The truth, which the mainstream media has avoided like they avoid the truth about the China virus, is that the "cages" were not the brainchild of the Trump administration, but were actually installed and used by the Obama administration to separate various groups of illegals. Jeh Johnson, Barack Obama's Secretary of Homeland Security, when confronted with photographic evidence, admitted this and told NPR's Mary Louise Kelly that the "cages predate the Trump Administration." Johnson went on to say, "You can't just dump 7-year-old kids on the streets of McAllen or El Paso. And so, these facilities were erected...they put those chain-link particions up so you could segregate young women from young men, kids from adults, until they were either released or transferred to HHS. Was it ideal? Of course not." But it was done by the Obama administration.

Thomas Homan, Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement under President Trump, stated that "The kids are being housed in the same facilities built under the Obama Administration. If you want to call them cages, call them cages. But if the left wants to call them cages, and the Democrats want to call them cages, they they have to accept the fact that they were built and funded [by the Obama administration] in FY '15, and I was there."

President Obama, Michelle Obama, Joe Biden, and dozens of others have all knowingly lied about these so-called "cages" being a Trump travesty. They use the old Lenin-inspired tactic of repeating the big lie again and again until people actually come to believe it's true. ("It must be true because everyone's saying it.") And, of course, the media has supported the left in this effort by repeatng the lie over and over. Eventually, though, the people begin to comprehend the real truth and realize that the lie really is a lie.

I have long considered President Obama to be the most ineffectual and incompetent president of modern times. But he just might be relived of this title when Joe Biden actually moves into the White House.
