Saving the Republic
The left loves to confiscate. It stems from its basic belief that individuals do not and should not own anything. In their view, only the state, the acquisitive state, should possess. Socialists, communists, and yes, even fascists all believe the state alone has the right and should, therefore, exercise its power to take anything from anyone in order to further its mission. And what is that mission? To exercise total control over the population, because that's the only way totalitarianism can survive. When all power resides in the state and a people is dispossessed of everything, that same people can do nothing. Of course, we see an example of this with so-called "gun control," a policy that ultimately aims at gun confiscation. An unarmed public is far less threatening to those in power than one which possesses millions of weapons. This, then, is the theory under which the acquisitive state operates.
We saw signs of this in England and elsewhere when landowners and even small property owners were attacked both politically and financially. But the signs became very real during the twentieth century when the Soviet and Chinese Communists, along with their less influential proteges, blatantly confiscated all productive property. In response, the United States government openly condemned the violent and terroristic approach of these nations. And yet, despite the condemnation, our government's policies tended push our nation and its people in the same leftward direction. The New Deal, the Fair Deal, the New Frontier, the Great Society, Globalization, Obamacare, the Green New Deal, and many other doctrines and programs moved our nation and its people away from personal freedom and toward increased governmental control of all aspects of their lives.
Although most of these doctrines were hatched in the political incubators of the Democrat Party, the Republicans did little to slow the process. Under Republican administrations we experienced the establishment of many intrusive agencies and recent Republican presidents have expanded government spending by huge amounts, doing very little to slow the advance of an unelected bureaucracy to power. It would seem many Republicans have decided to continue along the same leftward path, but to do so more slowly and less conspicuously. At the same time, they declare the welfare state is doomed, that it will eventually collapse. One is reminded of Margaret Thatcher's famous line: "The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money." Perhaps, but that can take a long time so long as those "other people" willingly provide the funds.
Free-market economies not only offer economic freedom and opportunity, but also encourage political freedom. But it's important to remember that socialist regimes like Communist China have been able to remain in power, even though they reject the true economic freedom and productive benefits of capitalism. They've stayed in power because they use the technological advancements of capitalism, technology they acquire through both trade and thievery.
The Communist Chinese have learned much from the earlier mistakes of the Soviets. Personally, I don't believe they are about to collapse, at least not in the near term. Such regimes, which rely heavily on terror, will manage to survive so long as capitalism still exists. I suspect they can last even longer through the ready use of force and other means of coercion. Force, especially when it is applied brutally, can overcome a people's desire to achieve the material benefits of a free economy.
If we truly want to save our Republic from morphing into just another form of totalitarianism, we must take a totally different approach, less political and more spiritual, more religious. We must openly address the moral inhumanity of all forms of socialism. Socialism aims to deprive the individual of the gift of his humanity since it views people as mere statistics, thereby demeaning them all. It denies the person the ability to exercise the freedom to choose how he lives and deprives him of responsibility for his future and for the well-being of family and community. Only by focusing on moral and spiritual means and ends can the plague of socialist totalitarianism be defeated. It demands more than individual, family, and community prayer. Prayer is necessary, but we must also act. We must courageously address our civilization's and our nation's moral and spiritual foundation, ensuring that those who follow will continue the fight for the freedom God wills for us. We must accept that we are not fighting an economic or social war, but rather a spiritual war. No other approach can succeed.

The Bishops’ Choice
With a Biden/Harris administration imminent,
many of our bishops have thankfully come to realize that they will not be able
to continue their longtime flirtation with the Democrat Party. If the most
recent statement by Archbishop Jose Gomez, President of the U. S. Conference of
Catholic Bishops (USCCB), is any guide, maybe some of our bishops now know that the
Democrats are no longer all that friendly to the Church. Indeed, the
friendliness of those once-favored politicians, one that seemed so sincere, was
nothing other than masked hostility. Anti-Semitism, anti-Catholicism, and the
rejection of all things Christian is often declared openly by prominent
Democrats without fear of reprisal by others in the party or by the mainstream
media.
Sadly, though, the bishops seem somewhat
confused. Just days after the election, Archbishop Gomez encouraged the nation
to come together "in a spirit of national unity" and then
congratulated Joe Biden:
"...we recognize that Joseph R. Biden, Jr. has received
enough votes to be elected the 46th President of the United States. We
congratulate Mr. Biden and acknowledge that he joins the late President John F.
Kennedy as the second United States president to profess the Catholic faith. We
also congratulate Sen. Kamala D. Harris of California, who becomes the first
woman ever elected as vice president."
But then, about a week later, Archbishop Gomez
made a somewhat less enthusiastic statement, beginning again with a glance back
to the Kennedy years:
"For
only the second time, we are anticipating a transition to a president who
professes the Catholic faith. This presents certain opportunities but also
certain challenges."
He then addressed the perceived positives of the
future Biden administration:
"The
president-elect has given us reason to believe that his faith commitments will
move him to support some good policies. This includes policies of immigration
reform, refugees and the poor, and against racism, the death penalty, and
climate change."
Here we encounter a litany of Democrat talking points, even though their policies only make things worse. How often do the bishops focus on the root cause of illegal immigration and condemn the leadership of the corrupt and authoritarian regimes that drive immigrants to our borders? Instead, they condemn our leaders who only carry out our nation’s laws.
The socialism being toyed with by so many Democrats is nothing more than a great equalizing mechanism that lowers everyone to the same impoverished level. The greatest poverty-reduction program is a growing and healthy free-market economy, one that provides employment and opportunity and doesn’t ship jobs overseas.
As for racism, the Democrat Party supports
the nation’s most inherently racist activity, for abortion is the leading cause
of death in the nation's black community. Planned Parenthood, after all, was
founded by a professional racist, Margaret Sanger, who desired nothing less that
the eradication of all those lesser races. African American support for
abortion is simply suicidal.
Unable to avoid the elephant in the room, the
Archbishop continued by calling attention to Biden's policies on abortion:
"He
has also given us reason to believe that he will support policies that are
against some fundamental values that we hold dear as Catholics. These policies
include: the repeal of the Hyde amendment and the preservation of Roe
vs. Wade. Both of these policies undermine our preeminent priority of the elimination
of abortion."
He then went on to mention other concerns about
policies supported by Biden:
"...restoration of the HHS mandate, passage of the Equality
Act, and unequal treatment of Catholic schools."
To refresh your memory, Obama's HHS mandate
required the health insurance of religious organizations to include
contraception, abortifacients, sterilization... (remember the Little Sisters of
the Poor?). The Equality Act prohibits discrimination of homosexuals and
others, even by religious organizations. A Catholic school should be able
to hire only teachers who accept Church teaching on such issues as
homosexuality and trans-genderism.
Abortion, of course, has long been a
divisive issue, although for many bishops and priests the slaughter of the unborn was
simply one small piece of the “seamless garment” representing all life issues. For
too many years, abortion, if not tolerated, was at least overlooked so long as
the bishops’ Democrat friends toed the line when it came to capital punishment,
immigration, healthcare, and a host of other issues. Many bishops still follow
this path. Cardinal Gregory of DC and Cardinal Tobin of Newark both come to
mind.
Do you recall the enthusiasm among so many Catholic clergy when President Obama was elected. Obama sounded so thoughtful, so charitable,
so socially just, so in tune with Church teaching on all the important things.
Yes, his words told a wonderful, bright story of hope and change, but his
actions...well, over time they pointed to something far darker. It took them a while, but
some of the bishops eventually saw that the Democrats’ vision for the nation
and the world is a future in which Judeo-Christian “values” – i.e.,
the truth -- will be strongly suppressed by a wiser government.
Of course, “truth” was another word missing from
the Archbishop’s statement. Archbishop Gomez is instead almost apologetic. In a
kind but concerned way, he apparently hopes that Joe Biden, the candidate who
advertised his Catholic faith at every opportunity, will come to accept Church
teaching. That, of course, is highly unlikely because his party’s key social
policies openly reject that teaching. And one thing we know about Joe: he is first
and foremost a Party man.
It will be interesting to observe how this relationship
between bishops and president evolves. “This is a difficult and complex
situation,” Archbishop Gomez reminded his colleagues, and then did what every
bureaucrat does: he decided to form a committee, a working group “to emphasize our
priorities and enhance collaboration.”
Good luck with that. One would think just
focusing on the truth and holding Catholic politicians responsible when they
reject the truth would be good enough. Are there bishops who think otherwise?
Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no help [Ps 146:3].
Certainly, as disciples of Jesus Christ, we must work together to carry on God's saving work in the world, while always remembering it is God's work, not ours. And God's work is always very good.

It's All About Abortion

It's truly a remarkable statement since Catholic magisterial teaching on abortion has never varied. The Church has consistently labeled abortion an "intrinsic evil." In other words, it is always evil. But the Church's teaching has little effect on the mainstream media "theologians." As one talking head stated, "Many Catholics don't accept the Church's teaching on abortion, so that teaching certainly isn't unanimous." Uh, sorry, but as Pope Benedict XVI reminded us, "The truth is not determined by majority vote." Yes, indeed, the truth is the truth, and the truth is what the Church's magisterium teaches.
My opinion on all this? Abortion is Satan's doing, and those who support it are joining him in this work, some knowingly, most unknowingly. Like the communists, Satan too needs and attracts useful idiots.
If I were Senator Schumer, I'd be worried about a different whirlwind, like the one prophesied by Isaiah:
"For see, the Lord will come in fire, his chariots like the whirlwind; to wreak his anger in burning rage and his rebuke in fiery flames" [Is 66:14]

Stuff That Bothers Me
Today is a beautiful example. The Dow plummeted more than 1,000 points this morning, although I expect it will rise somewhat before the day's end. And it's all because of the virus out of a China, or so they tell us. Personally, I think they're also panicked about commie Bernie's surge in the polls. Many of these wimps are the same never-Trumpers who for three years have done everything in their power to make things difficult for the President. Now they might well have to choose between Bernie and Trump, which even for these cowards is really no choice. And so, two nasty little bugs have apparently got them all running scared.
Interestingly, the companies most affected are those who decided long ago that they didn't mind dealing with a nation run by totalitarian murderers. I can recall several CEOs telling me that by "doing business" with the Chinese, American firms would show the communists the benefits of a democratic, free-market economy. I thought they were fools then, and I still think so today. One would assume that a CEO, who likely has at least a passing affinity for power, would realize that for totalitarians power is the only thing that matters. The communist leaders of China aren't "in business" to create a wonderful life for their people; far from it. Indeed their early and continued mismanagement of the virus as a public health crisis typifies their love for the people of the People's Republic."
China's communist leaders realized that a planned economy couldn't compete outside it borders, so they allowed "private" companies to form and compete in the global marketplace. This and the theft of technology are the primary means the communists have used to finance their expanding military and their growing international influence. But every single Chinese company is under the communist thumb; make no mistake about it. China has actually evolved from the communism of Mao to what is really just another form of fascism in which the government "manages" the nation's private industry for its own purposes.
The Iowa Democrat Caucuses. How unfortunate for the Democrat Party. The party's national and state leadership used an app designed and managed by folks who are politically connected with the Clintons, Obamas, and other Democrats. This, of course, is exactly what corrupt governments do. Corrupt governments don't spend taxpayer money on the most competent, cost-effective providers of products and services. Instead, they give business to those who are "connected", those who funnel money and other goodies into their political campaigns. The result? Too often, incompetence and sheer chaos. It reminds me of Vice President Biden and the millions his son reaped from the Ukraine and China for expertise Hunter Biden completely lacked. And have you forgotten the famous Obama healthcare app, the one that cost billions to develop? It turned out to be littered with bugs and plagued by access problems, despite being the most expensive app in history. Should the Democrats win in November, this is just the sort of incompetence and corruption we can expect.
CNN and Diversity. Did you notice how upset a CNN anchor was because the team the president put together to address the coronavirus problem did not meet his standards of diversity? This, of course, is just another example of the Iowa Caucus syndrome. Instead of examining the competencies of those assigned to the task force, CNN looks only at their sex and race.
Forgotten Warriors. We've all watched the commercials and many Americans are making monthly contributions to organizations such as Wounded Warriors and Tunnel2Towers. These and similar organizations were established to provide assistance and family aid to military personnel and first responders who have been wounded or have sacrificed their lives in defense of our freedom and our society. I cannot comment on the efficacy of these organizations because I have little first-hand knowledge, other than what I have heard from others and seen in the commercials. But their work, which I can only assume has helped many deserving people, is not my concern here. What bothers me is the very fact that these organizations must exist. Our governments -- federal, state, and local -- send military personnel, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and others into harms way every day. And yet, as a people we abandon them and their families when they suffer horrendous wounds or lose their lives in our defense. Congress established a multi-billion dollar fund to compensate the innocent victims of the 911 terrorist attacks, a fund that paid out an average of $2 million to each affected family. I have no problem whatsoever with that, but just compare it to what the family of a service member can expect if he or she is killed in action:
- $250,000 from Servicemen's Group Life Insurance, premiums paid for by the serviceman, unless declined.
- Death gratuity of $6,000
- Up to $6,900 for burial expenses
- Family rent-free government housing for 180 days
- Payment of member's unused leave (vacation)
- Dependency and indemnity compensation of $948 monthly for the un-remarried spouse, plus $247 for each child
- Other benefits include temporary healthcare coverage and commissary and exchange access.
That's enough. I have to prepare a homily for a committal service tomorrow, for the widow of a Korean War veteran.

They have fully embraced the culture of death in what has to be the most vile vote in the history of the United State Senate.

All About Power and Corruption and Death
Many of my relatives, my recent ancestors, were Democrats because they bought into the party's emerging gospel that only big government could solve big problems. But it's all bread and circuses, folks, a lie that's been accepted by far too many in the past. The result has been a near continuous stream of authoritarian and totalitarian slave states throughout history. Of course, as the power of government grows, the people become politically impotent.
"Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority; still more when you superadd the tendency of the certainty of corruption by authority.”In effect, he's telling us it's hard, perhaps impossible, for career politicians to resist the attractions of great power exerted over others. Unfortunately, in our nation neither party is immune. Both Republican and Democrat politicians fall prey to these attractions.
In recent years, however, the Democrat Party has too often been the party most enamored of government power. In the South, many Democrats used the power of government to ensure the continuation of segregation well into the mid-twentieth century. LBJ is a perfect example of the Southern Democract who was an avid racist but came to realize the political advantages of repackaging himself as a civil rights leader.
Northern Democrats often leaned far to the left, grasping the failed ideas of the European socialists. But they soon realized that the majority of freedom-loving Americans would not accept authoritarian rule by elites, something that true socialism demanded. And so they toyed with the subtle and gradual implementation of socialist principles, introducing them as progressive means to a better life.
But at its core, the left has always sought power, always looked for ways to control the masses. And so they must lie about their aims and the means to achieve them. The welfare state, radical environmentalism, open borders, confiscatory taxation...it's all about power.
"Despotic power is always accompanied by corruption of morality.”Yes, indeed, morality becomes something the powerful can adjust and redefine to conform to the prevailing zeitgeist. Pope Benedict XVI called it the "dictatorship of relativism," and warned the Church and the world to cast it aside and embrace the truth. And what is the truth? Nothing less than Jesus Christ Himself:
"I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me" [John 14:6].Today our politicians strive to distort the truth by destroying life and denying that Jesus Christ is the way. This is why I have no doubt that Satan is pulling all their strings. He began his evil work in the garden by tempting our first parents to embrace the power of God Himself: "and you will be like God, knowing good and evil" [Gen 3:5]. And he continues that work today using the same tempting words.
In recent weeks he has unleashed the killing of our most innocent, but immediately followed it up with a series of bizarre environmentalist proposals to distract us from his deadly aims. Just read the idiocy offered as policy yesterday by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) to turn our weak 21st-century minds from the real sin against the Holy Spirit. And, yes, I label abortion a sin against the Holy Spirit, After all, in the Nicene Creed, which we pray together every Sunday, we proclaim the Holy Spirit as "the Lord and giver of life." Through abortion we toss that aside and attempt to assign that title to ourselves.
Whether you're a Republican, Democrat, Independent, or nothing, please pray for our politicians. Pray that they come to accept God as a giver of life. Pray that in all that is good they give glory, not to themselves, but to God.

Random Thoughts
The root causes? Europe's movers and shakers openly deny its Judeo-Christian roots and have convinced most of the population to do the same. In fact, Europe has discarded Christianity to such an extent that today European atheists quite likely outnumber its active Christians. And Europe's Jews are more at risk than anytime since the 1930s. It's all very sad and so predictable. Once the cult is removed from a culture there's really nothing left that's worth saving. I expect that my children and grandchildren will witness Europe's accelerating destruction from a kind of continent wide civil war. It will be messy, fueled by an immigrant-led insurgency, a confused and suicidal secular establishment, and a feisty nationalistic remnant. Think of Syria on a continental scale. Messy indeed.
Every Memorial Day I suffer because of the stupidity and ignorance of so many. Yesterday, for example, some leftist talk show host stated that on this day we should honor those who resist President Trump. Hearing such talk from the left encourages me since I can't believe most Americans could possibly agree. If the day ever comes when a majority discard the true meaning of Memorial Day and replace it with such gross political tripe, we are doomed as a nation.
Then there's the trivial uttered by the clueless. Earlier yesterday morning a smiling TV meteorologist declared that Memorial Day is "really the day we celebrate the beginning of summer, the first real beach day!" She was hoping to join her family for a week's vacation at the Jersey shore.
Of course there are also those well-meaning but ignorant folks who confuse their holidays. One news flunky told everyone to "be sure to thank all those veterans out there on this day when the nation remembers them." Yes, it's always nice to be thanked (on Veterans Day), but the ones we thank on Memorial Day are the ones resting in peace in our national cemeteries.
And I try to ignore all those who create the commercials and newspaper ads that use Memorial Day as a way to push their wares.
I really think the decline began in June 1968 when Congress voted to change the dates of four of our national holidays to give people three-day weekends. No longer would Memorial Day be celebrated on May 30; we would now salute our fallen on the last Monday of May. With this, people began to think more of the long weekend with its barbecues and trips to the shore than of those who gave their lives so we could taste such pleasures in the freedom they won and preserved for us.

As for Senator McCain, I've always thought he was too much the politician. For me that's perhaps the worst thing you can say about a public figure since I can't think of a single career politician I respect. I'm sure there are a few deserving some respect; I just can't think of one. Career politicians, driven by their desire to remain in office, tend to lose whatever philosophical and moral grounding they might once have had. Lacking this firm foundation they say whatever is necessary to appease the voters and then do what is necessary to maintain power. I won't denigrate Senator McCain's patriotism because he certainly suffered at the hands of the Communist butchers of then North Vietnam. This, however, happened years ago and I have many friends who suffered right alongside him. No man should be judged solely on the good or bad he did in the distant past.
I'm concerned more with the senator's recent political antics that seem to be focused more on creating problems for his personal foe, President Trump, than on the good of the country. The latest piece of news is that he is waiting until after June 30 to resign, thus eliminating the need to have an election for his seat this year. This would allow Arizona Governor Doug Ducey to name McCain's wife, Cindy, to serve as senator until the 2020 elections. If this is true -- and I don't know that it is -- it seems to be just another example of a career politician's sense of entitlement. The voters are ignored so the politician's plans can be fulfilled. We'll just have to wait a month to find out.
